Kalido made a number of announcements at the Teradata PARTNERS 2010 Conference this week. I’ve talked to several attendees in our booth and in private meetings with industry analysts, and the response has been great!
Our biggest announcement was regarding the availability of the Kalido Information Engine for Teradata. The idea to do this has been floating around for several years but the big impetus came from a very significant joint Kalido and Teradata customer. Their challenge: centralize their information management and give it a global footprint as they expanded their business via acquisition, bringing regional data marts into a central Teradata EDW in a cost effective way. They’ll use Kalido to consolidate disparate data marts into the EDW and manage the models from those marts in the EDW. As they were already using Teradata and Kalido in various parts of their business, it made sense to marry the complementary capabilities in the two solutions to deliver rapid speed to implement and a level of agility and automation for handling business change that only Kalido could bring, with the great performance of Teradata.
To deliver on this vision we’ve specifically designed the Kalido Information Engine to leverage the Teradata architecture in the following ways:
- The Kalido large dimension loader uses an Extract-Load-Transform (ELT) design to exploit the Teradata high-performance architecture, delivering linear load performance as you add nodes. In our internal tests, transactions were loaded into Kalido more than three times faster on Teradata than on a comparable Oracle database and more than 14 times faster than on a comparable SQL Server database.
- Kalido allows for the selection of the primary indices, supporting tuning methods typically used in Teradata warehouses.
- When primary index definitions change, Kalido provides an automated facility to migrate the data to the new table structures.
- Kalido leverages the Teradata Parallel Transport load operator for fast reference data loads and automatically manages temp tables and data movement to the tuned reporting schema.
- Kalido allows for precise schema control to support features such as Teradata compression and aggregate join indices. Tuning the schema can be done without requiring changes to the inbound load interfaces, making it fast and easy to continually tune your environment to get maximum performance.
We also announced a joint market offering – Teradata and Kalido Accelerate for Agile Data Warehouse. This is a bundle of Teradata and Kalido under the Teradata Accelerate brand. The solution comes bundled on a choice of Data Mart Appliance or Data Warehouse Appliance hardware, and includes implementation services from Claraview. This bundle is designed for mid-market companies who need the same agility and performance as large enterprises but scaled and priced for their needs.
The third announcement was a hierarchy and rules management solution. This new model-driven solution enables customers to maximize their existing enterprise data warehouse implementations by giving business users greater access to and control of critical business information. Here’s an example: An organization creates different product bundles for different markets and needs to account for each of the individual product components. But with so many permutations it can be really difficult for the organization to accurately measure those components and report and analyze the data in the warehouse. Such an organization can use this solution in the Finance department to create new rules, change existing rules, audit and approve all changes while maintaining a history of changes made, all without requiring direct IT intervention.
