Managing Master Data Using Federalist Principles

In the early days of MDM, a common question was, “union or intersection?” Business Unit A has 30 attributes for customer. Business Unit B has 50. 10 of them are common. The question was, in other words, “should MDM manage all 70 attributes, or just the 10 common attributes?” Read more

Measuring data governance programs

Assessing the impact of any program or initiative requires measurement of outcomes to determine progress toward objectives.  While this may be a blinding glimpse of the obvious, we have to ask ourselves “what is the desired outcome that we want to achieve” before we can decide what to measure and how to measure it.  This is especially true in regard to data governance programs.  When we think about measuring the effectiveness of data governance programs, we can think about it across multiple dimensions. Each of these dimensions provides insight into a different aspect of the enterprise that the program touches. Read more

Government Agencies Solve Decision Support Challenges with Noetix

In 2010, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a memorandum mandating improvements in key deliverables of financial system modernization projects, including decision support. OMB’s guidance, coupled with significant complexities and changes in Oracle applications, are causing government agencies to rethink their data access and delivery strategy – particularly those agencies that are considering implementing or upgrading to Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.

Agencies like the Social Security Administration (SSA) are turning to Noetix for simplified data access to operational data sources. Noetix translates the complexity of the data sources into easy-to-use reporting objects or business views and significantly improves visibility and usability of real-time data, empowering non technical users to create and publish operational reports with little or no training.

For example, SSA chose Noetix software to automatically handle the conversions and database re-mappings required with new Oracle applications releases. With support from Noetix, SSA had the tools and technology required to meet deadlines and stay ahead of schedule during a recent migration to Oracle Release 12. Today, about 165 end users from SSA’s centralized accounting department use Noetix for ad hoc queries to develop their own financial reports. They now have secure access to additional data in cross-functional reports that they were not able to view using Oracle Discoverer.

Noetix provides agency analysts and related professionals an easier means to create, modify, and maintain operational reports without asking for technical assistance, reducing report development costs by as much as 70 percent.

United States Constitution and Data Governance

In 1787, there was such a thing called “The United States of America”, but it didn’t have a lot of power. The real power was held by the 13 former colonies, or states, each of which is a sovereign nation with its own laws, currency, and taxes. The United States of America was formed 6 years before that, driven by the need to fight a common enemy: Great Britain. So it had an army. Plus, it could negotiate treaties with other countries. But that was about the extent of its power. Read more

Noetix Search: An Essential Tool for Accessing Your Noetix Data

Are you wondering what exactly Noetix Search is used for? Let’s start with some background: NoetixViews and Noetix Analytics both provide incredibly rich data models for helping you get to your data. You can build transactional and operational reports with NoetixViews, as well as multi-dimensional analysis and dashboards with Noetix Analytics.

One of the challenges, because the models have so much content, is finding the right objects to serve as the basis of your report. Which view should I use? What relationship set has the right fields for my dashboard?

This is exactly the problem Noetix Search is designed to solve. Noetix Search provides a familiar, easy-to-use interface that allows you to look through all the Noetix content to find what you need. You can browse through your views and analytics using a hierarchy based on subject areas – Payables, Receivables, Inventory, Projects, or whatever functional areas you have. You can also search, just like you do in Google, simply by entering a few keywords.

Once Noetix Search finds something that might be a good match, it presents a detailed page with all the relevant information that you need to understand how to use it. For a Noetix view, that page includes descriptions of all of the view’s columns, some questions you can answer using the view, lists of related views, a list of all the Oracle database tables used by the view, and more. For Noetix Analytics, the detail page shows all of the fields, all of the tables (including the join definitions between them), a diagram of the star schema, and more.

For any report author, Noetix Search is an essential tool that unlocks the full value of the other Noetix products. For more detailed information on Noetix Search, view this short On Demand Demo.

What does the statement, “NoetixViews automatically matches my ‘unique configuration’ of Oracle E-Business Suite,” really mean?

QUESTION:  What does the statement, “NoetixViews automatically matches my ‘unique configuration’ of Oracle E-Business Suite,” really mean?

ANSWER:  NoetixViews software creates database views that are automatically generated by patented technology called Noetix MetaBuilder. This technology scans through the setup details of an Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) installation, discovers how EBS has been configured, and uses that information to create custom views that match the configuration.

The most common (and most obvious) setup details that Noetix MetaBuilder detects are Key Flexfields (KFFs) and Descriptive Flexfields (DFFs). All of the structures that have been defined for your KFFs and the segments and qualifiers that are defined for each structure are detected and used to expose those KFF segments as columns in the views that are generated. In a similar manner, the attributes you’ve defined in your DFFs become columns in the generated views. Noetix MetaBuilder even recognizes context-sensitive DFFs and maps them appropriately into the views it creates.

Beyond flexfields, there are many other configuration details that Noetix MetaBuilder detects and uses to modify the views that it generates. Here are a few of the most common examples:

  • Multiple Currencies – If multiple currencies are enabled, NoetixViews will show monetary amounts in both transaction currency and base currency.
  • Credit Card Information – In different versions of EBS R12 (12.1, 12.1.1, 12.1.2), Oracle has changed the way credit card information is stored. NoetixViews automatically detects the current version and automatically retrieves the credit card details so that they are displayed properly.
  • Trading Community Architecture – Oracle Trading Community Architecture (TCA) is a data model for managing complex information about customers, including organizations, locations, and the network of hierarchical relationships among them. TCA was first used in Oracle Accounts Receivable v 11.5, and has been broadly expanded in R12. NoetixViews automatically detects the version of EBS and incorporates TCA appropriately throughout its views.

There are many other setup details detected. NoetixViews includes literally hundreds of “profile options” – configuration settings that control the behavior of Noetix MetaBuilder so that it generates views that match your configuration of EBS. The value to you is clear – you can be confident that the views that are generated for you will return data correctly because they match the way your installation of Oracle EBS is storing that data.
